Get Smell Out Of A Closet

Pets, vermin, smoke and mildew are common causes of closet odor.

Mildew and cigarette smoke odors from your closet can transfer to your clothes, or vice versa. Pets, insects and vermin may sneak into the closet, leaving persistent urine and feces odors. You can get rid of and prevent closet smells with a few common household items and special cleaning products. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove all the items from your closet. Wash fabrics and clothes with bleach, if possible, and hang-dry to get rid of the odors. Otherwise, take them to a dry cleaner. If shoes are musty, store them in shoe boxes with silica packets to absorb odors. Leave your closet door open for a few hours to give it a chance to air out.

2. Shake chlorinated lime generously over the floor of a closet to remove mildew odors. Let the lime sit until the odor is gone, and then sweep it up. Leave an open container of silica gel in the closet to absorb moisture and prevent future mildew problems.

3. Remove smoke odors with a solution of white vinegar and warm water. Wipe shelves, walls and uncarpeted floors with the solution. For carpeted floors, sprinkle baking soda on the floor and let it sit for an hour, and then sweep it up. Leave a bowl of vinegar or bleach in the closet overnight to absorb any lingering odors.

4. Wipe your closet thoroughly with a pine-scented household cleaner to remove insect and vermin odors.

5. Spray urine generously with a pet urine neutralizer and leave it for an hour. If odors persist, repeat this process a few more times. If urine has soaked into a wood floor, sand the wood and coat it with shellac to get rid of the odor.
