The interior of your refrigerator has multiple metal surfaces, including the wire holders that keep the shelves in place. Using chemicals or traditional rust removers is dangerous because those products might contaminate the food inside the refrigerator, especially if you leave a small amount of the chemicals behind. Instructions
1. Pour white vinegar directly onto a scrub pad and rub it against any of the rusty surfaces in the refrigerator. Add a small amount of water and wipe away the liquid, using a soft cloth. The vinegar is strong enough to cut through minor rust damage, but it may not be strong enough to remove all the rust.
2. Add a small amount of lemon juice to a small bowl. Pour in an equal ratio of baking soda and stir until the mixture forms a thick paste. Rub the paste onto any rusty surfaces of the refrigerator and let sit for at least 15 minutes. Once the paste dries, wipe the surfaces with a damp cloth and check for any signs of rust. If rust still remains, go on to Step 3.
3. Mix equal parts salt and lemon juice together in a small bowl. Dip a soft cloth into the mixture and wipe down all surfaces of the refrigerator with the solution. Keep rubbing the solution around the metal. Next, wipe off any excess with a damp cloth.
4. Combine equal parts lemon juice and cream of tartar, if the other methods fail to remove all the rust spots. Apply the mixture to the rusty spots with a soft cloth or sponge. Rub quickly against the rusty spots, using the paste to slough off the rust.
5. Saturate a soft cloth with club soda and wipe down all areas of the refrigerator with the liquid. This pulls away any rust flakes that moved into other areas of the fridge during the cleaning process and also cleans the metal surfaces. Club soda doesn't require rinsing and leaves behind a fresh scent.
