Decorate A Commode Closet

Choose a bright paint color to keep your commode closet from feeling claustrophobic.

Decorating a commode closet can be tricky because it's such a small space. However, there are a lot of things you can do to make your commode, or toilet, closet comfortable and help it feel a bit larger than it is. Decorating your commode closet properly won't cost you any more money either, just take some time to plan before you start buying and decorating. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Paint the commode closet with a bright color. If you don't want to use a bright color, use white instead. Dark colors can make a small space feel much smaller than it really is, and in a small space like a commode closet, sometimes called a powder room, it can start to feel claustrophobic. Use semi-gloss paint in a commode closet because it can easily be cleaned with a soft sponge and a mild mixture of soap and water.

2. Avoid dark-colored commodes. Much like painting the interior a dark color, using a dark-colored commode makes the space feel smaller than it really is. Look for a bright white commode, or stick with pastel colors if you prefer. If possible, choose a commode with a gloss finish - it will help reflect light, which helps to make a small, enclosed space feel more open. White fixtures are also less likely to look dated as time passes.

3. Use built-in fixtures like toilet paper holders instead of using stand-alone fixtures. Standalone fixtures take up extra room that you simply don't have in a small space like a commode closet. Your built-in fixtures should match the commode . If you prefer to use metal, choose a polished metal, like chrome or nickel.

4. Hang a mirror in the commode closet. Mirrors make all types of rooms feel larger by giving them an extra dimension of perceived visual space. You don't have to use a big mirror; even a small 2- by 2-foot mirror can make a huge difference in a small commode closet. It's also a useful item in bathrooms that won't feel out of place.

5. Keep the commode closet free of clutter. Excess items like soaps, packages of disposable towels or too many reusable towels will all make your commode closet feel smaller than it really is. As a general rule of thumb, if you won't need it that day, don't keep it in your commode closet. Keeping a small space free of clutter makes it feel bigger by opening up the visual space.
