Clothes Closet Designs & Ideas

Use the space above your clothes bar to maximize storage.

Organizing your closet in a stylish way can be simple with a few key techniques. Most standard closets come with not much more than a bar for hanging your clothes with a shelf above for miscellaneous items. Whether your closet is a reach-in or walk-in, you can add a new layout to your closet design to help you access your stored items whenever you need them. Does this Spark an idea?

Box Shelving

You can creatively maximize your space regardless of the closet size. In a reach-in closet, you can increase your storage space vertically by adding boxed shelving all the way to the ceiling. Boxed shelves are great for storing shoes, belts, hats and other small accessories. Boxed shelves work for walk-in closets as well, where there are far more options for creatively positioning horizontal and vertical storage.

Hidden Television

If you can't bear to miss the morning news report while getting dressed for work, add a small bench and hidden television to your closet. A mirror television is elegant accent to an upscale closet design. Mirror televisions look like mirrors when turned off, but act like a regular television when the power is on. Remove shelving from one of your walk-in closet walls and replace it with a mirror television. If space and budget permit, add a small glass blown chandelier above your bench for a modern, sophisticated touch.

Visual Presentation

A very simple upgrade to a walk-in or reach-in clothes closet are stacked clothes bars. Stacking a clothes bar simply means placing two bars along the same wall--one at the top and one beneath. Usually longer garments such as dresses are hung at the top, while the bottom bar is reserved for shorter skirts and tops. Add shelves for mesh accessory bins to keep small items accessible. "Being able to actually see all your socks, ties, and underwear (versus only the top layer) gives you real choices when you get dressed," advises This Old House.
