Go Camping Near New York City Ny

You don't have to go far from NYC to find a camping space.

While you won't find any places to pitch a tent right in New York City, a number of campgrounds are located within 50 miles of the city. The railroad and a number of long-distance bus lines will get you there. The closest campgrounds are actually across the state border, in New Jersey or Pennsylvania. If you're willing to move a bit farther, you can reach the Adirondack mountains in upstate New York state, where many campgrounds are located.

Instructions

1. Head to Liberty Harbor Marina (libertyharborrv.com) if you have a recreational vehicle. Located just across the river in Jersey City, New Jersey, this RV park is the closest campground to NYC, just a few miles away. No tent camping is available, but the park offers 50 RV sites as well as full amenities and daily bus tours to NYC.

2. Drive into New Jersey if you want to stay within a 50-mile radius of NYC. New Jersey offers a number of camping opportunities, both semi-urban and rural. For example, the Mahlon Dickerson Reservation (morrisparks.net/aspparks/mahlonmain.asp) in Lake Hopatcong is just 37 miles away from the city and offers wooded sites and access to hiking and mountain biking trails. You can also try Turkey Swamp Park Campgrounds (monmouthcountyparks.com) for RV and tent camping, or the Green Valley Beach Campground (greenvalleybeach.com) for a pet-friendly camping site near the ocean.

3. Head to Pennsylvania if you want a major campground with access to water activities. The Pennsylvania campgrounds less than 75 miles away from NYC are located near or on the Delaware river. They offer plenty of opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, boating and swimming. For example, the River Beach Campsites (kittatinny.com) offers access to whitewater rafting, while the Driftstone (driftstone.com) on the Delaware campground is a good option for canoeing and kayaking trips.

4. Drive north to the Adirondacks if you want to camp in the mountains. There are three major camping areas in the Adirondacks: Lake George for family fun, Lake Champlain for access to historic sites and Lake Placid for mountain views and good hiking and mountain biking trails.
