Build A Garden Storage

An outdoor garden storage unit is a great place for supplies.

A garden is not complete without a storage area for tools and supplies. If you have limited space, a mini-garden storage unit is an invaluable resource. Building this handy structure requires minimal carpentry skills and can be completed in an afternoon. It can help you keep your hand tools, clay pots and potting soil dry and organized. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Cut four boards from 2-by-4 pine, each 22 1/2 inches long. Cut four more boards from 2-by-4 pine measuring 8 1/2 inches long.

2. Set two of the shorter pieces on edge parallel to each other and 19 1/2 inches apart. Place two of the longer boards over the edges of the shorter boards, creating a rectangle; it should measure 22 1/2 by 11 1/2 inches. Use wood screws drilled through the sides of the longer boards into the ends of the short pieces to connect the rectangle. This will be the bottom of the outdoor storage unit. Repeat the process with the remaining four boards to create a top for the unit.

3. Cut two pieces of plywood measuring 23 1/2 by 80 inches. These pieces form the front and back of the storage unit.

4. Decide which piece of plywood to use as the front of the unit. Starting at the bottom, cut a door out of the front piece measuring, 66 inches high and 14 inches wide.

5. Trim the tops of the of the front and back piece on two angles, to create a roof shape. Make sure the angles match.

6. Cut two more pieces of plywood, measuring 11 1/2 by 72 inches. These pieces will be the sides.

7. Arrange the top and bottom rectangles parallel to each other and 65 inches apart. Using finishing nails, attach the plywood pieces to the rectangles. Attach the sides first, then the front and back. The bottom of the plywood should be flush with the bottom of the base 2-by-4s, and the triangle shape of the roof should start at the top edge of the top 2-by-4s.

8. Cut two more pieces of plywood measuring 13 1/2 by 17 inches. These pieces will be the roof of the outdoor storage unit.

9. Attach the roof pieces, nailing them to the edges of the triangular top section. Cover the roof with shingles.

10. Cut four pieces of plywood, measuring 11 1/2 by 22 1/2 inches. These pieces will be the shelves. Glue them at the place you want them -- one should probably be at the bottom, like a floor -- and then attach them with nails driven through the walls.

11. Attach the cut-out piece as the door, with three hinges and a latch. Sand the the rough edges of the storage unit. Paint or stain the unit with an outdoor product.
