Measure For A Glass Sliding Door

If the time has come that you need or want to replace the sliding glass door in your home, one of the first steps will be to measure the door so you can order one that is the correct size. By taking a precise measurement of the old opening, you can custom order the new sliding glass door to the exact size and eliminate the need to expand or narrow the opening during installation. Any such work would add to the installation cost. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove any wood trim around the interior of the sliding glass door. To do so, insert a pry bar in between the trim and the wall and gently pull it free, being careful not to exert too much force, which can snap the trim in two pieces.

2. Place one end of the tape measure in the top left corner of the opening, so it is firmly up against the vertical wood stud. Extend the tape measure horizontally across to the top right corner of the opening to the stud. Depending on the width of the patio door opening, you'll most likely need two helpers; one to hold the tape measure in the top left corner and another to help stretch and hold the tape measure firmly along the top of the opening to get an accurate measurement. Record the measurement.

3. Place the tip of the tape measure in the bottom left corner of the opening and extend the tape measure across to the bottom right of the opening. Record the measurement.

4. Place the tip of the tape measure in the top left of the opening and extend it downward to the bottom left of the opening and record the measurement.

5. Place the tip of the tape measure in the top right of the opening and extend it downward to the bottom right of the opening and record the measurement.
