Build A Luxury Walkin Closet

Build a Luxury Walk-In Closet

A luxury walk-in closet can afford you great comfort and the ultimate in organization. Not only can you separate and sort clothes according to season, style and function, but you can surround yourself with full-length mirrors to ensure that you're dressed to perfection. Whether you're building from scratch or expanding an existing closet, you'll first need to consider your wardrobe space requirements. Racks, drawers and shoe cubbies-with everything in its place and a place for everything-should bring a smile to even the most scrutinizing individuals. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Ascertain the amount of closet space you need to accommodate all of your hanging clothing, folded clothing and accessories. Lay out all of your clothing. Use a tape measure to measure the length of your hanging clothes and folded clothes. Look over your accessories to determine the amount of drawer space they need.

2. Allocate a corner portion of your master bedroom for your new luxury walk-in closet. Frame out any new walls and frame the new closet door. Use a sliding pocket door that will maximize space and give the illusion that the closet is larger.

3. Build walls using plywood or drywall according to your design. Complete any floating, caulking and sealing on the walls. Add any matching molding and floor trim to complete the look inside and outside of the closet.

4. Paint the walls inside the closet and outside facing the bedroom. Use semi-gloss paint on the door and trim for a luxurious sheen.

5. Build plywood shelving inside the closet to accommodate hats, purses, cases and any other items peculiar to your apparel. Screw racks into the walls. Make shelves high up in the closet. Make sure to sand the plywood to a smooth finish and then paint shelves with primer and semi-gloss paint or stain to suit.

6. If you're married, construct his and her shoe cubbies out of plywood. Make a shelving unit with backing that is 6 feet tall by 4 feet wide and about 12 inches deep. Make the bottom shelf 12 inches tall to house boots, and make each additional shelf above it 6 inches tall. Separate each shelf with 4 partitions to create individual shoe cubbies. Glue partitions into place and then screw the unit onto the wall. Paint or stain to suit.

7. Fabricate a long, built-in dresser drawer unit. Use plywood to construct the frame. Build boxes for drawers and add drawer glides to the outsides and match glider guides to the insides of the frame where drawers will sit. Allow his and her sides, and make it tall to maximize on closet space. Add designer knobs.

8. Create clothes-hanging sections to accommodate full-length items like dresses and coats, as well as shorter sections for skirts, jackets and shirts. Cut poles to suit the desired sizes of these sections.

9. Include two full-length unframed mirrors at opposite ends of the closet. Attach mirrors to walls using mirror clips.

10. Add overhead inset lighting before putting in your ceiling. Install lights in appropriate areas above mirrors, dressers and racks.
