Decorate A Small Space Into A Home Office

Maximize a small space to make it work for you.

A small space can be transformed into a workable home office with some savvy decorating and smart storage solutions. The key to putting a small room or area to work is to keep it as organized as possible. Eliminating clutter will not only help you work more efficiently and with less frustration, it will also make your small space seem less cramped and crowded. Your space can be stylish but give priority to furniture and accessories that are functional and space-saving. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Choose furniture that does double duty. A storage bench provides seating while offering a place to hide file boxes, extra printer paper and other office supplies. Choose a desk with file drawers or make a desk by placing a top over two short filing cabinets rather than trying to squeeze a desk and filing cabinets into the room separately.

2. Utilize wall space. Attach peg board on the walls to hang office supplies the same way you might hang hand tools in a garage. Paint the peg board to match your walls to make it appear less utilitarian. Floor-to-ceiling shelving or built-in bookshelves save floor space by letting you arrange things vertically. Keep the things you use most often within easy reach and put only those you seldom use on shelves that are hard to reach.

3. Look for flexible solutions. Individual cubbies can be stacked and rearranged in different configurations for ideal storage that suits the space. Another benefit to flexible furniture is that is can be changed as your needs change so you don't have to buy another new piece of furniture.

4. Organize everything neatly in its place to maximize a small space and keep your home office looking tidy. Instead of piling office supplies and folders on shelves, put similar types of items together in shallow baskets and file folders and papers in decorative file holders with labels. Instead of boring office containers, use more decorative items like vases and bowls for corralling pens or paper clips and printed storage boxes for envelopes or computer accessories.
