Install Bifold Doors On A New Closet

Install Bifold Doors on a New Closet

Bifold doors are doors that slide open along a track. Most of the time, these types of doors are used on closets. Instead of simply going back and forth, bifold doors bend out and fold in half so that the entire closet is viewable. They come in many styles and colors, and you can hang them as a single door or, for larger closets, use them side by side. Bifold doors are easy to install. This project should take approximately 4 hours. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure 7 inches from the top and 11 inches from the bottom on the door that will be closest to the jamb. Place the hinges on the side of the door so that the bottoms of the hinges lines up the measurements you just made. Screw the hinges to the door.

2. Hold the two doors together the way they will touch when the door is open. Make sure the tops and bottoms of the doors are flush with each other. Place the other hinges on the leading door and screw them in place.

3. Attach the pivot plates and locking arms to the top and bottom of the jamb side door. The exact location of this hardware will vary according to the style of your door. Follow the manufacturer's directions.

4. Measure the opening of your closet and cut the sliding track with a hacksaw to fit in the opening. Place the track 1 inch from the front of the closet. Secure the track loosely with screws.

5. Place the floor bracket on the floor. The distance between the bracket and the jamb will vary by manufacturer. Hang a plumb bob from the track to make sure that the hole in the center of the floor bracket is exactly in line with the track. Mark on the floor exactly where the bracket will be placed and set it aside.

6. Put the jamb side door's pivot plate pin into the pivot socket on the track. Lock the lever on the socket in place to hold the door. Put the locking arm of the leading door into the track hanger. Twist the arm so it stays in place.

7. Pull the bottom of the doors out enough that you can fit the floor bracket onto the bottom pivot pin. Place the bracket on the outline you made on the floor in Step 5 and screw it in place.
