Care For A Cedar Closet

Cedar is a beautifully aromatic wood, and a great selection for closets. Cedar is a natural moth repellent, and will help protect your clothes from the damage moths can inflict. As cedar ages, it can lose that natural scent, and the rich color can dull. If this has happened to your closet and you miss that look and smell, you can refresh the cedar in your closet with just a few tools.

Instructions

1. Empty everything out of the closet to open up the work area and protect your clothes from sanding dust. Lay a dropcloth on the floor and hang a dropcloth over the door to prevent dust from spreading into the room.

2. Install a sheet of 100-grit sandpaper onto your orbital sander. Sand the walls of the closet with even, medium pressure in steady back-and-forth strokes. Replace the sandpaper whenever it becomes full of dust and ineffective.

3. Vacuum the sanding dust off the walls. Use a brush or hardwood floor attachment to clear as much of the sanding dust as possible. Wipe the walls with a tack cloth after vacuuming to clear any residual dust.

4. Treat the walls with a thin coat of cedar oil to intensify the wood's color and scent. Place a small amount of oil on a clean, dry cloth and rub it into the wood in even strokes.

5. Clean the closet regularly with an oil soap to help maintain the wood's condition. Sand and treat the wood with cedar oil once a year to keep the look and smell.
