Build A Luxury Closet

Get out of the confines of a small closet into something a bit more ... luxurious.

Make your closet more than a place to store your clothes by creating a luxury closet and dressing room. Apply the same plans and techniques to a standard walk-in closet or an entire converted room. This can be a DIY project for a skilled homeowner or you can create a special closet retreat space when you build a new home or remodel. Fixtures, color, lighting and accessories all play a role in creating a relaxing, functional and luxurious closet space. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Assess your space and needs. Look at your wardrobe, whether you are building a closet for one or two, and determine a budget.

2. Design your dream closet on paper. Draw out the closet on graph paper using one 12- by 12-square grid to represent each foot. Delineate the space, allowing for hanging space, drawers and shelving. Make room for a vanity table and bench or even a comfortable chair if possible.

3. Choose a wood or medium density fiberboard closet system that matches well with your design.

4. Paint your walls to provide a lovely backdrop for your new closet system and wardrobe. Choose a soft neutral for a shared closet, or opt for a bolder color if you don't need to compromise. Install a soft carpet flooring or easy-care laminate. Choose good quality incandescent lighting that will replicate natural light to make it easy to match clothing and check your final appearance.

5. Install your closet system. Check carefully to make sure that surfaces are smooth and finished, rods are even and all supports are secured into the wall studs.

6. Bring in coordinated storage baskets, drawer liners and other accessory pieces. Fill your closet with your clothes, bags and shoes. With a place for everything and everything in its place, your new luxury closet will make the most of your storage and offer a relaxing beginning and end to each day.
