Organizing A Closet

Drawers, shelves and hanging racks make closets much more organized.

A well-organized closet makes life easier and more convenient. How well-organized your closets are is more important than how much storage you have. Closet organization doesn't always require a large amount of space and can usually be accomplished for a minimal cost. Custom-made closet organizers are easy to find in stores or online. For those who enjoy do-it-yourself projects, homemade closet storage cubes make an easy weekend task. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Sort through the items in your closet. Make piles as you work and sort each item by type. For example, you might have a pile for clothes, shoes, books, bedding and hosiery.

2. Try on all clothes, shoes and other clothing items and make sure they still fit. If they don't fit or you don't wear them, take them to a local donation center or sell them in a garage sale.

3. Look at the layout of your closet and decide how best to manage the space. If you tend to accumulate a lot of clutter on the floor, consider installing additional shelves or hanging racks.

4. Purchase any organizational products necessary. Closet organizational products include hangers, storage systems, shoe racks, tie racks, hanging shelves, cubbies, baskets and hanging rods. Purchase identical hangers if possible, since irregular sizes take up more space in the closet.

5. Store away clothes and other items that are out of season. Difficult-to-reach shelves at the top of the closet near the ceiling are ideal places to store seasonal items. Wash or dry-clean before packing so that you can simply take them out when you want to wear them again.

6. Replace items in an orderly manner. Good Housekeeping recommends storing clothes by outfit, rather than type. You can also organize clothes by color or style (casual, formal, seasonal).
