The Best Ways To Store Jeans

Jeans require proper storage to look their best.

The perfect pair of jeans can be hard to come by, so you understandably want to extend their lifetime as long as possible. Although jeans are made from sturdy denim material, they need to be treated with care. Storing jeans improperly can wear away at the waist, cause unwanted creases or wrinkles and ultimately alter the fit and appearance. Does this Spark an idea?

Folded

Folding jeans is the one of the gentlest storage methods if you have ample shelf or drawer space. Many clothing stores display folded jeans because they don't have to worry about hanger creases if the jeans are hung incorrectly. Lay your jeans on a flat surface with the front side facing up. Fold the jeans in half from left to right, so the legs are stacked on top of each other and the zipper is inside the fold. Grab the stacked jean legs and fold them in half so the hem of the jeans lines up with the waistband. Fold the jeans in half one more time.

Lay your jeans into a drawer or on a shelf with the waistband at the top. Place another folded pair of jeans on top, but facing the opposite direction with the waistband facing down. Continue alternating the direction of the jeans as you layer additional pairs. The jeans will lay more evenly and prevent the stacks from falling or getting bunched up in a drawer. No matter how careful you are folding your jeans, they may unfortunately develop a few wrinkles that you'll have to iron out.

Hanging

Hanging your jeans can save space, especially if you only have closet storage space; however, if jeans are not hung properly, they can cause jeans to crease or become misshapen. Lay your jeans face up and fold them in half from left to right. Keep the jean legs lined up and gently pull them through the center of a thick plastic hanger until they are folded in half and both the waistband and bottom hems line up while hanging. Adjust your jeans so they lay evenly across the center of the hanger, away from the sides. If your jeans don't hang evenly in the center of the hanger, they may develop wrinkles around the knees on the side that is pressed against the side of the hanger.

Precautions

Wait until jeans are completely dry after washing before storing them. Store jeans away from light-colored fabrics, because the indigo dye in jeans can rub off. Avoid using hangers with clips that hold your jeans vertically from the waistband. The pressure from the clips can wear away at the waistband and cause the denim to fray or stretch. Do not use wire hangers to store your jeans. The wire is too thin to evenly hold jeans and will cause creases in the knees.
