Make A Vampire Costume

Love at first bite

There are few popular Halloween figures more classic or recognizable than the vampire. The vampire lurks in shadows looking for lonely damsels to prey upon, shape shift into bats and wolves and embody romantic, mysterious danger. The vampire costume has become a Halloween classic that never goes out of style. Follow these steps to make your own vampire costume.

Instructions

1. Choose a black suit or black pants and a white shirt for the base of the costume. Shop at vintage stores for an older suit to give you the look of an Old World count at a bargain price, or simply use something out of your own closet.

2. Measure a large piece of black fabric so that it will fall to calf-length when draped around your shoulders. A longer length of fabric may cause you to trip. Use black velvet or satin, if possible, to give your costume a rich and distinguished air. If these are not available, any type of black fabric can be substituted.

3. Cut the length of black ribbon in half. Sew one half on each side of the end of the black fabric that will be the top edge of the cape. When you drape the fabric around your shoulders, use the ribbon ties on either side to tie the cape around your shoulders.

4. Loop the length of red ribbon around the collar of your white shirt and criss-cross the ends. Fasten one end over the other with an ornate pin or brooch or simply safety pin it from underneath. This detail will give you the appearance of a stately count.

5. Place the prosthetic fangs over your teeth as directed in the instructions accompanying the packaging. Adjust them so that they are comfortable and secure so that there is little risk of them slipping and posing a choking hazard. Insert your fangs prior to applying other makeup so you do not stain them.

6. Apply white face makeup to your face, neck and hands to give your skin a pale and deathly tone.

7. Accent the white skin tone by applying a small amount of black face makeup under your eyes and along your cheekbones and blending well to create shadows that will give your face a hollow, sunken look.

8. Dab fake blood around the corners of your mouth and on your face to give the appearance that you have just fed on a victim. Experiment with applying and placing the blood until you achieve the desired effect.

9. Finish your costume by spattering the front of your shirt with a little more of the fake blood for contrast.
