Tips On Building A Closet

Closets are very important elements to a living space. The fundamental element of a closet, a small room with a door for storage, is quite easy to create--it is the structure within that space that needs extra thought. Creating a closet that is functional and suitable for your needs requires some thoughtful planning. Does this Spark an idea?

Size and Shape

The size of your closet depends on the space you have available and what you will be using the closet for. If you are taking space from a room to build the closet, think about how the room will function when that space is removed. While it is nice to have a closet with walls and doors, a closet can also be formed using a curtain bar and thick curtain to separate the space, which means the closet is easy to take down or adapt if your needs change.

Interior Space

What will you be using the closet for? Is it a coat closet that will also store linens? Is it the closet in your bedroom that will hold most of your wardrobe? Think about the uses of the closet and make a list of needs and contents you will store in the closet. If it is a closet for your wardrobe, perhaps it would make sense to build shoe shelves below the hanging rack, a space that is most often empty. Tall storage shelves at the top of the closet are a great place for items that are not used frequently. How tall does this space need to be, based on what you are storing? If you plan to hang coats or dresses in the closet, be sure to include a hanging bar or two.

Selecting or Building Shelves

Many DIY stores carry basic closet shelving that can easily be assembled for the closet. Another option is to build everything from scratch, which allows a truly custom design, such as shelf widths and heights that might not be readily available.

Testing the Space

Create one wall of the closet and fill the wall with items you plan to store in the closet. It is much easier to make alterations to one wall than the entire closet. If items are too large for this wall, rather than adjusting the wall, perhaps it makes sense to build the space on the other wall.
