Retrofit Sliding Closet Doors

Standard sliding door sizes will fit most closets.

Sliding closet doors provide privacy and save space for wider closets. Sliding doors are set on a track positioned at the top and bottom of the closet with strike plates on the sides to protect the wall from the constant opening and closing. Sliding closet doors are simple to install; the key is proper measurement so that you order the right size doors. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the closet for proper ordering. Start by measuring the top and bottom. Ideally, the measurements will come out exactly the same. Next, measure the two sides. Finally, measure the two diagonals. If each pair of measurements comes out the same, you can usually purchase an off-the-shelf model. If not, you'll need to custom-order doors that meet your measurements.

2. Remove the old closet doors by pulling the doors up and out of the track. Remove the old closet frames by removing all the screws along each side. If the track is not easily coming off, look for more screws. Before you pull the old track off, run a utility knife along the crack between the track and the wall to cut away any paint that is holding it in place.

3. Set the new track's side strike plates into position and use a 3-foot level to verify that the tracks are sitting vertically straight. Place the top and bottom screws into place first to hold the sides in position and then fill in the rest of the screws.

4. Slide the bottom track into position and verify that it is perfectly horizontal. Screw it into the side track; you'll see a screw hole on each side for this purpose.

5. Line up the top track and screw it into the side tracks. Finish off the top track by screwing it into the ceiling at each screw hole.

6. Install the sliding doors carefully by first setting them into the top frame and then, while pressing up, sliding them into the bottom frame.
