The Minimum Size For A Bedroom Closet

The minimum closet size for a couple will be different than that of a single-person room.

The minimum size required for a bedroom closet will vary depending on a number of factors. Although many apartments and homes come with closets already intact, these may not address all the needs of the people using the bedroom closet. While it's possible to add on to closet space, a number of elements should be considered before determining whether or not your closet fits the minimum requirement for the bedroom. Does this Spark an idea?

Pairing Down

Before a person can truly decide how much closet space is necessary, it helps to go through the items in all the home's closets and get rid of unused items. According to "Creative Homemaking", most people only wear 20 percent of their clothing 80 percent of the time, which means they may be believe that they need more closet space than they do. Before moving into a new home or before building additional closet space, this time of housecleaning should be the first order of business.

Needs Assessment

After getting rid of unnecessary items, a homeowner can then trying to determine how much closet space is needed. This is a time for a needs assessment. People use closets for different things and not all of them are to store clothing. In addition to housing clothes and shoes, a closet holds seasonal decorating items, extra blankets and other bedroom items. Additionally, the number of people needing closet space also plays a role in how much closet space is necessary. For example, a husband and wife may need more space than a single person using a bedroom. Additionally, in smaller apartment units like studios, many of the spaces including closet must be tapped for additional duties. For example, some apartment dwellers may want to use the bedroom closet to store a stackable washer/ dryer unit, because it keeps it out of sight.

No Standard Size

When all else fails when trying to determine the minimum size of a bedroom closet, a person can consider the following; according to "Dimensions Guide", no standard size for closets exist, although there are some good rules of thumb for how big closets typically should be. The average hanger is between 14 and 19 inches long, so the closet should be deep enough to hold accommodate the hangers. This factor is only one element in determining how large a closet should be for a bedroom.

Final Determination

Once all of the factors determining the closet's uses have been assessed, it's then up to the homeowner to decide what kind of space she needs for a bedroom closet. The minimum amount of space required then can be assessed by determining the closet's uses and the size of the items to be stored in the closet.
