Donate Clothing In Canada

Canadian charities or nonprofit organizations often publish a specific wish list for clothing.

Donating clothing in Canada helps people who value gently used clothes and prevents reusable materials from accumulating in landfills. Some Canadian charities operate drop boxes, such as Community Clothing Centres in Ontario. Certain Canadian nonprofit organizations accept clothing for sale to a retailer and forward the proceeds to an agency. Other groups, such as St-James Drop-in Centre of St. James United Church of Montreal, distributes clothes to people suffering from homelessness and mental illness. Does this Spark an idea?

Condition of Clothes

Clean and undamaged clothes should pack into bags or sturdy boxes. Don't give clothes that have a lingering odor from smoking or a persistent stain. Clear plastic bags with sealed tops can hold rolled belts and small paired items such as mittens, gloves and socks.

Locations

According to Charity Village, many charities publish a wish list and even offer pick-up services from homes. In Vancouver, the Canadian Diabetes Association - Clothesline, B.C. Children's Hospital Auxiliary and the Developmental Disabilities Association operate drop boxes on sidewalks. In Alberta, the Goodwill Industries, a nonprofit agency, operates in Airdrie, Calgary and Edmonton. Ontario donors can forward clothes to the Ontario Federation for Cerebral Palsy, Good Shepherd Ministries in Toronto and Canadian Mothercraft of Ottawa-Carleton. The Salvation Army accepts clothing in all 10 provinces.

Clothing for Specific Causes

Some nonprofit organizations accept clothes for specific genders, ages and functions. For example, nearly-new suits dropped off at Dress for Success Vancouver help disadvantaged women who need a suit for a job interview. The Cinderella Project in Vancouver accepts formal attire to help grade 12 "Cinderellas" and "Cinderfellas" living with health, disability or other challenges to participate in their graduation festivities.
