Corner Closet Solutions

Your closet is supposed to provide storage space, but it seems like there's never enough. Corners are particularly troublesome spots in all closets. Closet rods and shelving do not usually fit properly. If it seems like storage space is shrinking, maximizing the space in a closet's corners will help. Does this Spark an idea?

Corner Closet Shelves

Installing shelves in the corner of the closet is the easiest way to maximize your closet space. This is ideal for very small closets with or without closet rods. A corner shelf is a diamond shaped shelf that installs flush in the corner. The edges of the shelf attach to the adjacent walls of the corner using special triangular brackets. Corner shelves come in many sizes and are available in wood and plastic varieties. Check your home improvement center or a custom closet manufacturer for corner shelves.

Overlapping Closet Rods

If you hang double rods in the closet and they extend all the way to the walls, the rods overlap and this causes a problem. With two rods mounted to the wall very close together, it is difficult to hang clothes on either rod. The space in the corner is then wasted. Cut one of the rods short and mount it to a bracket 24 inches from the adjacent wall at the corner. The 24 inches of space leaves room for clothes to hang on the adjacent rod, which runs all the way to the other wall. Now you have one rod mounted on each wall allowing you to hang clothes along the entire length of each rod.

Corner Closet Rods

A corner closet rod installs inside the corner of the closet. This rod has a 90 degree angle so it fits right inside the corner with no loss of space. This is another solution to the problem of overlapping rods. Instead of mounting two rods near the corner of the closet, with one that stops 24 inches short of the corner, and the other extending all the way to wall, you install a single 90 degree rod that extends all the way around the corner. The 90 degree rod is mounted into brackets near the corners of the closet. These brackets support the rod to allow it to continue around the corner. Your clothes hang from the rod all along the corner making full use of the space.

Combining Corner Storage With Shelves

To make the most of the closet space, combine the corner closet solutions with regular wall shelving or closet rods. Install corner closet shelves in the corner, and install matching shelves right beside them on each side. Run your closet rods right up to the side edge of the shelving on either side of the corner shelves. Double stack the rods to increase space for hanging clothes in a smaller horizontal area. Or install the overlapping rods in the corners and mount shelves on either side of the closet rods. Either arrangement maximizes corner closet space.
