Make A Curtain Closet

Create extra storage space using curtains.

Living in a home without inadequate storage space can be a frustrating experience. Often, in older buildings, closets will be either small or nonexistent. You can create a closet using curtains as a low-cost and faster alternative to remodeling. Devote an entire wall for a large closet or use a room corner for smaller storage. Does this Spark an idea?

Selecting Curtains

When selecting the curtains, pick something that matches your room's existing d cor. You could even use the same curtain types as your window treatments. Avoid sheer curtains, as it will leave your closet's contents visible. Tab top curtains save you the expense of curtain clips, but clips provide an opportunity for adding another decorative touch.

Full Wall or Corner Curtain Closet

Measure the height from the floor to the point where you want your curtain closet to extend, so you'll know the proper sized curtains to purchase. In terms of width, for a corner closet, one set will likely be enough to cover the area. Purchase multiple sets for a full-wall closet. Measure out from the wall to the point you want your closet to extend and install one eyehook at this spot on opposite walls. Span a high-tension airplane wire or curtain wire between the two hooks. Fold at least 3 inches of wire over the span on each side and attach with wire rope clips to secure. Put the curtains in place. Open the curtains and install freestanding clothing racks for hanging, freestanding shelves or use the space to meet your specific storage needs.

Existing Alcove Closet

Older construction may lack closet space but often contains distinctive architectural features like small alcoves and nooks. If your home has something like this, you can easily transform it into a curtain closet. Fill the area with shelving, hanging racks or other storage devices that meet your needs. Close off the area from the rest of the room by spanning a curtain rod across the alcove entrance. Use a floor-to-ceiling curtain to cover the area or one that's shorter to let light through if the alcove has a window.

Wardrobe and Closet Combination

You can combine a standard wardrobe piece of furniture with a curtain closet for storage variety. This type of curtain closet requires either half or an entire wall. Place the wardrobe in the center of the wall. Install a high-tension curtain rod between the wall and the wardrobe along its top edge for a place to hang the curtain. Thread the curtain in place before installation or use clips to install it, depending on the type. Place another high-tension curtain rod between the wall and wardrobe for hanging clothes. You can repeat the process on the other side for more storage if desired.
