Build A Music Studio In A Closet

Computer-based recording software has reduced the space needed for a music studio.

Home music studios are popular among musicians as a flexible and inexpensive alternative to traditional recording studios. Converting an existing space for use as a music studio can reduce construction costs and, in most cases, eliminate the need for a contractor or builder. Budgets for building a music studio in an existing closet can vary, depending on the level of finish, technical capability or studio features desired. Many projects can be completed by utilizing prefab or build-it-yourself furniture kits.

Instructions

1. Existing shelves can be incorporated into the music studio design for storage.

Remove any unnecessary shelving, hooks, rods, hangers or other fixtures in the closet.

2. Drywall patch kits are available in most hardware stores.

Patch or fill all holes in closet walls, door and ceiling to reduce the transfer of sound both in and out of the music studio.

3. Adding an electrical outlet in an existing residential space is typically an inexpensive project.

Hire an electrician to install electrical outlets in the new music studio. To reduce costs, route a heavy-duty extension cord from a nearby outlet into the closet for electrical power.

4. Many furniture retailers offer work desks designed for use with a computer.

Install or build a work desk to fit the needs of the music studio. Determine the space needed to record live instruments and adequate storage when selecting a work desk for the studio.

5. Most closets have a basic light bulb and fixture.

Replace closet light with a directional, low-wattage fixture to reduce heat and provide better illumination around the music studio.

6. Materials such as old rugs, blankets or carpet can make inexpensive sound-dampening material.

Install sound-dampening material as directed by the manufacturer. Cover the door, walls and ceiling to maximize the capability of the material. If the floor of the closet is wood or tile, install a rug or section of carpet to reduce sound transmission and echo.

7. Optimal studio configuration may require a few changes.

Install studio equipment and instruments. Test the operation and configuration of the new music studio and adjust as needed.
