Hang Closet Shelves

Hang Closet Shelves

Hanging closet shelves will organize a messy closet, saving time when getting ready in the morning. Shelving can be bought in a closet organizer kit, or in the shelving and storage section of a home supply store. Installing closet shelving is simple and can be done by just about anyone. Wire shelving kits will be the easiest to install, but will not look as nice as wooden shelves. Shelves can be installed simply with shelf brackets, wall anchors and screws. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Hanging Wire Shelves

1. Decide the height and location of all the shelves that will be installed in the closet. Use a level to make a straight line on the wall with a pencil to plot where the shelf will hang.

2. Measure the amount of shelf needed and use a hacksaw to cut the wire shelves to size.

3. Plot all of the locations of the shelf wall clips, which are the pieces that will clip the wall side of the shelf to the wall, on the line from Step 1 with an 'X' mark. The marks should start 1-inch in from the edges of the shelf, then be evenly placed with no distance between marks larger than 12 inches.

4. Drill a 1/4-inch wide hole at each mark, then push the clips into the hole and secure them with a fastening pin. Hang the wire shelf on the clips.

5. Attach a diagonal support brace to the front lip of the wire shelf by hooking it on or using clips or brackets included with the wire shelves. Put the level on the shelf and hold the shelf level, then place a mark where the support brace meets the wall.

6. Drill a 1/4-inch hole at the mark and insert a wall anchor and screw to secure the support brace. Install a support brace at both ends of the of the shelf and in the center if the shelf is large, making sure to place at least one support brace every 2 feet.

Hanging Wood Shelves

7. Decide the height and location of all the shelves that will be installed in the closet. Use a level to make a straight line on the wall with a pencil to plot where the shelf will hang.

8. Cut the wood shelves to the length needed with a handsaw.

9. Run an electric stud finder against the wall and mark the beginning and end of each stud.

10. Install a support brace to the wall into a stud as close as possible to where the shelf begins and ends, and one in the center for extra support. Drill a 1/4-inch hole and secure the brackets to the wall with 1-inch drywall screws.

11. Secure the shelf to the brackets with the appropriate size wood screws.
