Position A Queen Size Bed In A Small Room

Most couples who sleep together prefer a queen-size bed to a full-size bed. However, a queen mattress, 60 inches wide and 80 inches long, takes up at least 35 square feet--and that can be a lot in a small bedroom. In addition, you'll want space to maneuver around the bedroom, including entry to the bed from both sides. It takes a little planning but you can find the best position for a queen-size bed in a small bedroom. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Choose a bed frame that is not bulky. Footboards usually aren't necessary, and sleigh-style headboards can take up at least 6 inches of space between the bed and the wall.

2. Measure the dimensions of the bed, including the frame. You will not only need to consider how much floor space it takes but also any part of the bed that extends beyond its footprint.

3. Measure your room and draw it to scale on a piece of graph paper. Include the location and size of windows, closets and doors, remembering to note how much space you will need to open doors.

4. Draw your bed to scale on another piece of graph paper and cut it out. On the previous graph paper drawing of your bedroom, try placing the bed in different locations. You will want at least 2 feet between the sides of the bed and the wall.

5. Avoid placing the head of your bed along a window if possible. This can be dangerous during storms. You're also more likely to get cold in bed during the winter if you're sleeping right next to the window.

6. Consider placing the bed in a corner, leaving access from only one side and the foot of the bed. This is a better choice if only one person will be sleeping in it. Avoid this placement if two people will be using the bed regularly.

7. Plan for the placement of other large pieces of furniture, too, such as a dresser. If you want, you can even cut out models of those pieces from the graph paper and manipulate them as well.

8. Move your bed into the bedroom and try out its position. Be sure doors do not hit it and there is enough space to walk around it.
