Clothes Shopping Strategies

Know a few tips beforehand to make smart shopping decisions.

Shopping is either a delightful or daunting pastime. Pros can navigate the shopping sphere in a cinch, while others are left with the feeling that they still have nothing to wear. Eliminate part of the guessing game in clothes shopping with a few helpful tips. By being prepared, you'll learn to invest in quality pieces that work well with what you already have in your closet.

Shop Your Closet

Shop your closet before heading to the stores.

Begin by trying on everything in your own closet. Certain items that are too small or no longer complement your frame should be given away to focus on pieces that are flattering. Pay attention to colors and cuts that look good on you; this is what you should look for again when shopping. Try on each piece and mix and match separates to make new outfits based on what is in your wardrobe already. You might also notice a few basics -- a white fitted t-shirt, a slim dark-wash jean or a neutral cami -- are missing from your wardrobe. Now that you know what you have, you can focus on buying pieces that will seamlessly blend into your closet.

Make a Plan

Take a minute to write down what you plan to buy.

Based on your closet assessment, list the items you want to purchase. Perhaps you need to restock sweaters, or maybe you're in need of a new pair of jeans or pants to balance out an abundance of tops. You'll save time by having a list of what you want and need when you're shopping. Write down your budget to avoid going overboard in spending. Also, jot down places to shop. If you hear of a sale at a shop happening on Wednesday, write it down. When mental notes fail, a written list will steer you toward wise shopping decisions.

Begin with the Basics

Ensure that your closet is stocked with the basics first.

Shop for basics that are missing from your wardrobe first. If a simple black t-shirt is an item you continually reach for, it makes sense to buy one or two of those before splurging on an evening shoe or extravagant shirt. Whether you're a male or female, you can't go wrong with stocking black trousers, fitted tees, dark wash jeans, a white button-down shirt, and a two-piece suit. These are classic essentials that you can implement into your wardrobe to make it functional and wearable.

Invest in Quality

Use your budget wisely and mix high-end items with less expensive pieces. In order to build a wardrobe that lasts, invest in quality coats, blazers, sweaters and suits made from fabrics like cashmere and wool. These fabrics transcend time and will allow you to pull out that perfect fitting coat season after season. Toss on trendy scarves, necklaces and bracelets that might cost $10 to update the classics. By mixing high and low items, you'll compile a wardrobe that will never go out of style.

Shop Sales with Caution

Ensure that the sale item is right for you before making the purchase.

Be wary of sales and bargains as these words can lead to impulse purchases. A bargain is only a bargain if it is a quality piece, works well in your closet, fits correctly and doesn't exceed your budget. If an item fails to meet these standards, then no matter how big of a sale, it is not a bargain for you.
