Whirlpool Duet Troubleshooting

The Whirlpool Duet washer is a consumer-grade washer for home use that features electronic controls for easy operation. Though the washer will work well most of the time, there are occasions when it will encounter power problems or error messages. Most problems can be fixed by troubleshooting the machine and fixing it yourself.

Washer Does Not Start

Whirlpool Duet washers may not start for several reasons. First, make sure that the power cord is plugged into a working power outlet. Plug another device into the outlet to ensure it is receiving power. You may need to replace a fuse or reset a breaker in your home fuse or circuit breaker box if it has been tripped.

Next, make sure the washer door is fully closed. The washer will not run unless the door is shut.

Finally, make sure a cycle has been chosen, and push and hold the Hold to Start button for at least one second to turn on the washer. The Hold to Start button was created to avoid accidental running of the washing machine.

Error Messages

Several error messages may display on the Whirlpool Duet washer during operation. These error messages alert you to a specific problem with the machine, allowing you to make the appropriate fix.

The error code HF refers to a problem with the amount of water entering the washing machine. To fix the problem, press the Pause/Cancel button twice to stop the cycle and unplug the machine. Check that the faucets are turned on and that there are no kinks in the hose. If the washer is in a cold location, make sure that the inlet hoses have not frozen. Finally, remove the inlet hoses and check the filter screens for buildup of dirt or debris and clean them as needed. Once finished, reattach the hoses and plug in the washer. Select the cycle as normal and press Hold to Start to start the machine.

F02 is an error code for drainage problems. Press the Pause/Cancel button twice to stop the cycle and unplug the washer. To fix the problem, check for kinks in the drainage hose. If the washer is in a cold location, make sure the hose isn't frozen. Remove the hose from the back of the washer and check if it is clogged. Remove any materials clogging the hose. Finally, make sure the hose is no more than 96 inches above the floor. Any higher and the washer will not drain water properly. Once all the checks are finished and the hose is reattached, run the cycle again to see if the problem is fixed.

SUD is an error code that will display when there is an excess of suds in the washing machine. When the error code displays, the Whirlpool Duet washer will enter a cycle that removes the excess suds from the machine. To prevent this from happening, decrease the amount of laundry detergent for future loads of laundry.

If F4 through F16 appears on the display, there is an electrical problem with the washer. Press the Pause/Cancel button twice to stop the washer and press the Drain/Spin button to drain any excess water in the machine. Select the cycle again and press and hold Hold to Start to restart the washer. This should clear the error and return the washer to normal operation.

If any of the error codes persist, the problem with the washer may be serious. Contact a qualified service technician to repair the washer.
