Maltese dogs are usually affectionate and loyal.
Even the smallest Maltese dog can seem like it's all hair, especially when the time comes to groom it. Underneath all those fast-growing locks, however, is usually a loving and loyal companion dog that prefers to snuggle in your lap or stay close beside you when you are in its reach. Some also take on the role of watchdogs, barking furious warnings at suspicious noises -- a small puff of fur with a big heart.
Basics
Good grooming tools make the job easier.
Start when they are young. A Maltese puppy may not have as many grooming needs as an adult dog, but that will change as it gets older. Because it's is advisable to groom a Maltese daily, breeders suggest you get the dog used to it when they are just a pup. Lay it on its back or side every day, if you can, preferably when it is tired, and gently brush out the tangles. This will get your Maltese used to being handled and groomed. Then it's a matter of deciding whether a long cut or a short cut style is best for your Maltese and your lifestyle.
Long Cuts
A bow looks pretty and keeps hair out of the dogs eyes.
The long, flowing hair on a well-groomed Maltese can be beautiful and, though it takes a lot of work, the long-haired style is the most versatile. You should keep the dog's hair on the top its head trimmed to form bangs and keep it out of its eyes, but you can then catch it up in a top-knot and put a ribbon in it, or part it and style it in some other way. The rest of the coat can also be styled, but should be brushed every other day, at the least, and kept trimmed of snarls and debris. If you live in a hot climate, however, a different cut might be better.
Short Cuts
Short cuts help keep the dog cool in hot weather.
Short cuts on Maltese dogs can also be styled in different ways. The dog's coat can be shaved and styled in a way that allows it to resemble a Maltese puppy, even when it is an adult dog. A poodle-cut allows the dog to stay cool in hotter weather, yet retains part of the silky hair that Maltese are famous for. Maltese dogs also grow a lot of hair between their toes, so this area should not be neglected in the grooming routine.
Show Grooming
Show dog coats require a lot of care.
Show dogs undergo a daily grooming routine that keeps their coats in tip-top condition. They are usually bathed and brushed more frequently, with special oils applied to keep the coat shiny and prevent the dogs skin from drying out. A Maltese house pet's coat will not need the same level of dedication, though it can be just as beautiful in any style as long as you pay some care and attention to it.
