Caloric oven won't light
I have a Caloric stove/oven, from 1980. Gas with pilot light. It has been very dependable, but yesterday the oven decided it no longer wanted to light. This is the small oven above the stove, not the larger one below it. The pilot light is lit, but when I turn the knob on, the oven flame does not light. I do not hear nor smell any gas. I adjusted the pilot to a larger flame, thinking it was not hot enough for the fluid safety (is that what it's called?). Still nothing. Now this may or may not be relevant, but something else strange happened yesterday. On and off, we were using all four stove burners and both ovens (large holiday party for my daughter's college friends). Suddenly, 2 of the four stove burners would not light. Both the left and right pilot lights were lit. It was the left front burner, and the right rear burner. I thought it strange that it wasn't both lefts or both rights that went out. Later that evening, all 4 burners worked again, and are working today. At that time yesterday, I noticed that the oven pilot light had gone out, so I relit it, and it is still lit today. But as you already know, the oven itself won't light anymore. Any tips on what to check next? Thanks, Bill Hello Bill and Welcome to the Do It Yourself Web Site and my Gas Appliances topic. First try cleaning the pilot assembly. Blow out the pilot flame. Some gas odor will be noticed but it will not be a hazard or safety concern. Allow assembly several minutes to cool off. Than blow entire assembly clean using a can of computer keyboard clean. Insert the plastic extension tube into every opening, including the pilot flames gas opening and the two air openings located behind the flame located on the assembly. Once that is completed, relight the pilot flame and allow a few mintues for flame to reheat safety element. Which is most likely a fluid safety. Or can be a flame switch which uses fluid to keep electrical contacts closed inside the switch. Flame switches are both fluid and electrical. Can be identified by the round chrome device attached to the element tube. Flame switch will have two tiny screws used to attach the safety device to the back wall of the ovens. Safety Caution: If the safety used on that oven has a fluid flame switch, electical power must be turned off or plug removed from wall power outlet before and repairs are made. The safety device uses full house electrical current to operate. If the above does not resolve the problem, the safety device is defective (non operational) and must be replaced. Can be obtained at any local appliance parts store or online. See the related links to the right, ads in google, diy's own site or any online site for that brand, etc. Retail parts dealers and appliances parts stores can also help determine what the possible problem may be based upon that specific brand and model. Bring the make, model and serial numbers. Dealers and appliances parts stores are listed in the phone book. Cautionary Reminder Note: Before attempting any repairs, be sure to unplug the appliance from the wall receptacle power source first.
