Polish The Edge Of Granite Tile

Polish the Edge of Granite Tile

Looking to polish the edge of granite tile? There are several ways to do it. This article focuses on the hardest for the DIY granite tile counterrop person who wants a professional grade job.

However, you could go an easier direction by:

A. Simply coating the edge with a polyurethane coating to make the edge look a little more reflective.

B. Take the granite to a local tile vendor who will bull nose tile.

Here's polish granite tile yourself.

Instructions

1. USE A BELT SANDER WITH A COARSE SAND PAPER (40 OR SO)

Wet the sandpaper. Use the coarsest grit to grind down the marble to a bull nose contour. This will take some difficult work and sweat. Be patient. Some people prefer to grind the tiles before installing them on the counter to prevent damage to the thinset through excessive vibration. Others, install it and then bullnose it to make sure the granite tile bullnosing is flush with adjacent tiles.

2. MOVE UP PROGRESSIVELY TO FINER GRIT SANDPAPER, ALWAYS KEEPING IT WET (80, 150, 240, 400, 600)

Keep sanding consistently until the granite seems to be uniformly polished to that level. Switch to the next grit all the way up to 600. This can be done with a disc grinder as well but it is more time consuming.

3. USE A COURSE COTTON BUFFER WITH TRIPOLI COMPOUND.

These can be purchased at your local do it yourself store. Eventually, as with the sanding, you need to work to finer and finer compounds. Jewelers will carry white and red rouge as a buffing compound for the final stages.

4. SEAL THE EDGE WITH GRANITE TILE SEALANT.

After you have double checked your polishing for rough spots or inconsistencies, seal the tile according to manufacturer's instructions.
