Scholarships For Tuba Playing

Tuba players can apply for most music-based scholarships.

Tuba players can find several scholarships to help defray the cost of receiving a college education. Scholarships are available from numerous sources, including private organizations, as long as students meet the requirements. Tuba players should carefully consider which requirements they are able to meet prior to applying for a scholarship.

School Scholarships

Colleges and universities such as Texas Woman's University offers scholarships for part- and full-time students who play musical instruments such as the tuba. Student musicians can apply for and possibly receive a scholarship to attend the school of their choice if they plan to participate in the school's orchestra or band. The amount of the scholarships vary based on the school. The school's financial aid office can provide information on requirements and availability.

Organization Scholarships

Organizations such as The ASCAP Foundation offer scholarships to students majoring in music to attend schools anywhere within the United States. Requirements can range from playing a certain instrument, such as the tuba, to meeting or exceeding a grade point average requirement. In most cases, scholarship requirements are posted on the organization's website or are available by contacting the organization by phone or mail.

Audition-Based

Tuba players may find themselves in an audition-based competition to receive financial help. Scholarships such as the Marine Band Concerto Competition are awarded based on a student's application packet and audition. The auditions may take place anywhere in the country. Depending on the scholarship, students may be responsible for all travel expenses related to traveling to the audition. Some audition-based scholarships do not require students to audition unless they are selected for the final round of a competition.

Age Requirements

Although some scholarships are only open to students enrolled in high school, younger tuba players can find a plethora of opportunities. Scholarships such as the MENC Copyright Awareness Scholarship Program are open to students as young as 13 years of age. Young tuba players can contact organizations or schools directly to determine whether there are age requirements that may prevent them from applying for and receiving a scholarship.
