Godparents can be close family friends or relatives of the baby's parents.
A godparent in the Christian faith is traditionally responsible for ensuring proper care and religious guidance of the child throughout her life should the parents be unable to do so. Some denominations require that at least one godparent be a practicing member of the faith. Gifts from the godparents to the baby are traditionally linked to the religion but can include other traditional baby gifts as well.
First Cross
Godparents customarily give the baby her first cross as a sign of their responsibility in her future religious education. The cross can be either a child's cross with lots of animals, flowers and decorative embellishments or a more austere depiction of the crucifix. Selection depends on the level of traditionalism within the family and the godparents. If you choose a cross made of glass or porcelain, select one that hangs on the wall rather than rests on a flat surface, such as a dresser or nightstand, to avoid possible breaking.
Baby Bible
A child's first Bible is a meaningful and spiritual gift because it provides another avenue to educate him in the Christian faith. Christening Bibles include many versions such as pictorial, baby blue or pink with lots of embellishments or a simplified traditional Bible with the baby's name embossed or written in gold lettering on the front. Write a personalized message inside the front flap describing your joy and hope for his future as your godchild.
Savings Bond
A savings bond is a thoughtful and useful gift for a godchild to celebrate her christening. The role of the godparents is to ensure the care for her well-being, spiritual and otherwise, so savings bonds and stock certificates indicate that you are thinking of her future. For a more decorative presentation, frame the certificates with a festive border, noting the date and occasion of the gift.
