Zoeller submersible sump pump runs on switch stuck on float moves freely

Zoeller Submersible Sump Pump Runs On - Switch Stuck On - Float Moves Freely

Hi Everyone, I have a 2-3 year old Zoeller Submersible Mighty-Mate 50 series (I think it's a 50 series). Looks exactly like this (Zoeller website) Mighty-Mate 53, 55, 57, 59 | Zoeller Pump Company Anyway - it was installed by a plumber was working fine up until last Fall 2011. Then one day I heard it whining. The sump well was dry - it was doing its job. It just wouldn't QUIT doing its job. I unplugged it. I waited. The water came flooding back in from the drain pipe, filling the well. I waited till the water got above the float maximum level - and I saw that the float was working fine - moving freely - floating up as the water level went up. I plugged the pump back in. It pumped the water out, perfectly. When the well was empty, and the float was back down at minimum level, the pump kept pumping. I called a plumber he said the switch just needed the crud removed from it. I wasn't there when he cleaned it. I really would LOVE to be able to do this myself, as the pump is doing it again. I can't see why I have to pay a plumber $60 or more just to come clean off a switch when I can do it myself. Any one know the steps for this? I realize I will probably have to disconnect the pump from the exit (or exhaust) pipe. I can handle that. The check valve is well above that clamp. Also there's a piggy-back back-up pump sitting on a cinder block above the original primary one, so the basement won't flood while I have the primary pump disabled. I just need to know clean the switch. Thank you so much!!!! The switch itself on these pumps is inside the upper housing so I don't know what he cleaned. Make sure there is nothing underneath the float that would stop it from going all the way down to the off position. I can't see from the picture of the pump very well but on some pumps with that type of switch there is an area where the switch arm goes into the housing where debris can get trapped and impede the operation of the arm. Some pumps have a rubber boot covering this area. If none of these problems seem to exist, my guess is the switch itself is going bad. We get pumps in from time to time that are stuck in the on position. Some of the switch manufactures were/are using different metals for the switch contacts causing all kinds of problems while trying to be greener. Thank you for the quick response pumpguy! I contacted the Zoeller company the support tech told me the same thing - there just might be something stuck in the boot, preventing the float from going all the way to the bottom of the arm's range. He also gave me the part number of the housing unit that sits on top of the pump, that houses the switch, which I can order and just unscrew the old one from the top of the pump, and replace with the new one. Or I can bring it to a local authorized repair shop. Oh well, so much for simple solutions. I will check for gunk build-up. Weird that it has begun to do this on a repeated basis after only a couple years - where my old original pump (same model) never did it and the piggy-back pump never does it. Thank you again! kimm1117 Liberty pumps are better with a better warranty. I stopped using Zoeller for many reasons. Mike NJ
