Take Off Shelves In A Closet

Organize closet space by removing or moving around shelves.

Closets can provide valuable storage space for clothing, bathroom towels and toiletries, home supplies and other items. While shelves can help organize different items in the closet, they can also prevent larger items from fitting properly. In some cases shelves may be insufficient to bear the weight of heavier items. Removing the shelves can open up space and must be done before installing new shelves or reorganizing the closet to fit larger items. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove all items from the closet and off the shelves.

2. Inspect the shelves that you want to remove, paying special attention to the underside edges of the shelving where the shelf meets the walls. Attempt to lift or slide each shelf up and off the guides holding the shelf in place. If the shelf comes free, go to Step 4.

3. Inspect the underside of the ends of the shelf for screws or nails holding the shelf to the guide wood. Unscrew any screws. Use the claw of a hammer to pry out nails. If needed, place the tip of a pry bar between the shelf and the side of the closet and use a hammer to tap the top of the bar to break the shelf free. You may need to tilt the shelf at an angle to pull it out of the closet.

4. Look for screws or nails to remove the wood guides that held each shelf in place. You do not have to remove these wooden guide rails, but if you are adding different shelving it may be useful to remove the old rails before installing new ones. Unscrew or pry out the nails and pull the guides out of the closet.
