Organize Your House On A Budget

When you need to stay within your means, organizing your home can be a challenge. Usually money is not the best way to solve the problem, as the issue is usually too much stuff, not methods of keeping it. Systematically eliminating the things you own but do not use can make it easier to organize what's left when you are done. As long as you have the time to go through everything, staying on a budget is not too much of a problem. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Organize your clothes. Go through your wardrobe and get rid of everything that does not fit. After that, ruthlessly go through and get rid of the things that you do not wear often. Donate these to charity or a to friend or relative that may need them. Clothing tends to fall into the 80/20 rule--that is, most people only wear 20% of their clothes 80% of the time. Try to remember this as you go through your closet.

2. Digitize your media. Media such as movies or music can be converted into digital formats. Store them on your computer or a portable media player and either sell or get rid of the physical components. Some towns have stores that purchase used CDs and DVDs. If you have an older CD changer and stereo system, consider upgrading to a more modern system that can play from portable media players, which will make these transitions easier.

3. Sell or donate all the books you have not read or touched in years. Throw away all the magazines you have lying around, and consider weeding through all of your subscriptions.

4. Get rid of furniture. Depending on how minimalist you want to go, getting rid extra of furniture can free up a lot of space and make a room seem much bigger.

5. Convert unused rooms. Consider how often you use the den versus the living room, and whether you can convert your unused rooms into something more practical. If you have a large dining room you never use, but a small breakfast nook attached to the kitchen that you do use, you can move a desk into the old dining room and make it a study.
