Fix Hanging Closet Doors & Rollers

Closet doors take a lot of daily abuse and over time, they can experience several issues. The rollers and the track may become dirty or bent, and the wood on the doors may also be damaged, particularly if they are hollow core doors. These problems are minor and can easily be fixed on your own without having to replace the entire door. If the rollers are broken, however, this particular part will need to be replaced. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Fixing the Rollers

1. Examine the rollers for any bent parts or any dirt and debris that may be stuck inside the roller.

2. Clean the rollers thoroughly. Use a non-linting cloth and dish soap to wash the rollers.

3. Bend the rollers back into place if necessary. If the rollers are bent off the track, use your hands to gently bend them back into place.

4. Spray the rollers and the track with silicone spray. Hold the can 6 to 8 inches away from the area and apply a light coating of spray.

5. Replace the rollers if necessary. You can purchase a roller kit at most home improvement stores. Unscrew the old roller bracket on the door. Place the new bracket in place and attach the screws.

Fixing the Wood

6. Fill any holes with foam sealant. Hollow core doors are easier to patch if you can fill the hole area. Hold the spray can of foam upside down, approximately 6 inches away from the door. Fill in the hole. Let the foam cure until it is hard to the touch. Trim away any excess with a utility knife.

7. Cover over the foam with wood putty. Load up the end of a putty knife with wood putty and scrape it over the patched hole. Extend your edges out slightly to blend in the patch. Apply a very thin coat, 1/4-inch thick, to the door. Scrape off any excess putty with the edge of the knife. Let this set for four to six hours.

8. Sand over the putty with a fine-grit sandpaper. This will smooth out any rough edges and level off the patched area.

9. Refinish the door. In order to hide the patch, the closet doors will need to be painted with interior latex paint. Prime the doors first, let this dry for four hours. Apply at least one coat of latex paint and let it dry for another four hours.
