Change Shelf Wood

Changing the wood in a shelf can change the look of a room.

Changing the wood in a home shelf is an excellent way to renew the look of the room, or match the shelving to the furniture more closely. Changing shelf wood is also a necessary task for work and storage shelves, which will eventually require replacement over time due to wear or damage from water or insects. Even if you did not install the shelving, you should be able to quickly and easily replace the wood in the shelves with only minimal tools, as mounting the brackets, the most difficult part of shelf work, has already been done. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the shelf by unscrewing the brackets holding it against the wall. Measure the distance between the center of each bracket to the center of the next bracket, as this will need to be the distance between the brackets on the new shelf. Also measure the distance between the screws on each bracket. Remove the brackets from the shelf by unscrewing the supports screws with the drill.

2. Measure the size of the new shelf board using the old shelf board as a pattern. If desired, place the old shelf board on top of the new shelf board wood and trace the outline of the shelf onto the new board using the pencil. The size and shape of the shelf can also be changed at this point if desired.

3. Cut out the new shelf along the markings using the saw. Sand the rough edges of the saw cut to give the shelf wood a smoother finish.

4. Measure the placement of the new brackets and mark the position of the new screw holes accordingly. Pre-drill the bracket holes using the drill with a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the diameter of the wood screws. Attach the brackets to the shelf using the drill.

5. Mount the shelf in the old screw holes, tightening each screw partway until all the screws are installed and the shelf is determined to be evenly mounted. Tighten all the screws so the shelf is firmly against the wall. Place the carpenter's level on top of the shelf to determine if the new shelf is level.
