Do It Yourself Closet

When it comes to keeping your space neat, a clean and organized closet is one of the keys to that success. It's time to get rid of clutter and arrange your clothes and other accessories so that your closet will benefit you from now on. Creating your own closet can be the best way to go. It allows you to be in charge of how you want it designed and to decide where your things will be stored. Does this Spark an idea?

Storage, Space and Cost Decisions

You should start by figuring out what you will be storing in the closet, the space you have available and how you want your things stored. A good way to figure out what will be stored is to divide your things into groups. What do you use often, what is used occasionally and what is rarely used?

It usually cost less to build a closet by buying the wood and tools you'll need. If you buy the storage pieces and put them together to create the closet, the cost of each piece is priced higher than if you were to make it.

The amount of space you have in your closet should be relative to the amount of items you will be keeping in it. For instance, if you have a tall, narrow closet, you can hang lots of clothes and keep them folded on shelves, but having an excessive amount of shoes on the floor will leave you no place to walk.

Build the Closet

If you want a custom look and design to your closet, at an inexpensive rate, it is best for you to make it. You can buy a ready-made shelving system or make them yourself, then build them into the closet. All you need is wood, hardware and the right tools. You need to measure the space twice just to double check your work and then cut the wood and supplies you need only once. Remember that if you cut something too long you can always trim it, but if something is cut too short you cannot add to it.

Determine your shelving space by measuring the wall from top to bottom. Decide how many shelves you want and space them out between the top and bottom. Just make sure you leave enough room between each shelf, about 10 inches or so from top to bottom in order to keep folded clothes on them without being squished together and getting wrinkled.

With the space issue, make sure to leave plenty of room for a bar to hang your clothes on. Keep it high enough from the floor so the clothes don't hit the bottom and make it wide enough to accommodate your clothing needs. You can buy a metal rod and install it yourself from one end of the closet to the other. You can also install it between two dividers, which will give the hanging clothes a separate compartment from everything else.

A shoe rack is a must! You can build a rack and keep it on the floor; or as a real space saver, you can buy or make your own over-the-door shoe holder out of fabric. You can usually store up to 15 or 20 pairs of shoes on the door itself, leaving your floor space open.

Storage

Plastic or wicker bins are a good storage because you can stack them and place things in them you may not need that often. Bins made of wicker allow air to flow to the things stored inside of them. This helps keep your things fresh and must-free.

Not Used Often?

Make sure to leave a top, sturdy shelf for things you seldom use. In addition to clothes, you can store boxes of perfume, travel bags and accessories, or even old books and keepsakes in your closet.
