Make Two Levels Of Hanging Rods In A Closet

Add storage by installing double closet rods.

Adding space to a home is a prime concern for many as the quantity of stuff they want to store grows and grows. One place to add storage space is in your closet. By adding shelving, storage bins and more space for clothing, available space increases. One way to do this is by adding double closet rods. This can double the space for hanging clothes in one area of the closet, freeing up other areas for more shelves. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove existing shelving and closet rods by unscrewing brackets and mounting supports with a screwdriver and taking out the shelving and closet rods. Clear out all other objects in the closet.

2. Measure 80 1/4 inches up the back of the closet wall with a tape measure and mark this point with a pencil in three places along the length of the wall. Draw a continuous line across the back of the closet with a pencil and drywall ruler.

3. Measure 39 1/4 inches up from the floor with a tape measure and make three more marks at three points along the wall. Then draw another line across the wall at this height.

4. Find the studs in the wall with a stud finder. Place the stud finder on the wall and move it along your line. If you don't have a stud finder, knock on the wall with your knuckles. Where the sound is dense and not hollow, a stud is located. Mark off studs to hang closet rod brackets to support the closet rod on each line. Space them about 3 feet apart, with two on each end.

5. Position the closet rod bracket on the mark so the support hook is level with your line. Measure the height of the hook if necessary. Mount the brackets to the wall using wood screws and a screwdriver. Install brackets on all your marks.

6. Cut two closet rods or a 1 1/4-inch diameter wood dowel to a length 3 to 4 inches longer than the brackets are spaced, using a handsaw. Lay the closet rod or dowel into the bracket supports.

7. Check to ensure the closet rod or dowel is level. If not, adjust by removing the brackets and remounting them to the walls.
