Remove Closet Doors From Tracks

With a screwdriver and the proper technique, your closet doors will lift out of the way.

Whether you are painting a room or replacing the flooring, removing the closet doors is part of preparation. The procedure for removing both of the most common types of track-mounted closet doors requires only a screwdriver and a few minutes to get them off or out of the way to be painted. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Bypass Closet Doors

1. Use a screwdriver to remove the floor guide located on the floor, between the doors, at the middle of the door opening. If the guide is mounted on a carpeted floor that won't leave the screw holes exposed after removal, mark the screw locations on a piece of masking tape applied to the carpet surface.

2. Move the outer closet door to the center of the door opening.

3. Grip the door at both sides and swing the bottom outward approximately 1 foot, then lift the door slightly to free the door's track rollers from the top track.

4. Remove the inner closet door by moving it to the center of the door opening and repeating Step 3 to release the door from the top track.

Bifold Closet Doors

5. Slide the bifold door to approximately half-open and depress the top roller guide downward to remove it from the top track.

6. Fold the door against itself into the full open position.

7. Grip the door edges at each side and lift the door upward slightly to free the bottom pivot pin from the floor bracket, then lower the door to release the top pivot pin from the top track pivot bracket.

8. Repeat Step 3 to remove the adjacent door for double bifold units.
