Bifold Door Instructions

Bifold doors are useful in narrow spaces.

A bifold door is an interior door often used for closets, laundry rooms or furnace rooms. Because bifold doors are made of two panels hinged in the middle, they are useful in tight areas where a standard closet door might not have room to open fully, such as small bedrooms or narrow hallways. Bifold doors are available with solid panels or with louvers that provide ventilation while the door is closed. Bifold doors can be made from solid wood or pressed wood, which is usually less expensive. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the width of the opening where the bifold door will be installed. Trim the door's metal upper track with a hacksaw so that it is 1/8 inch narrower than the opening.

2. Secure the metal track to the underside of the top door opening with the screws provided and a Phillips screwdriver. Loosen the set screw in the track's pivot bracket. Slide the pivot bracket to the side of the doorway that you want the door to fold open against. Tighten the set screw.

3. Place the L-shaped pivot bracket tight against the floor so that it is directly under the pivot bracket in the track above. Attach the bracket to the floor and door jamb by screwing in the screws provided.

4. Tap the metal pivots into the holes in the top and bottom of each door panel, using a hammer.

5. Lift the bifold door assembly. Angle the top pivot into the pivot bracket in the overhead track. Swing the bottom of the door inward. Lower the door so the bottom pivot is inserted into the slot in the pivot bracket at the floor.

6. Insert the spring-loaded snugger into the upper track. Compress the snugger with your fingers while inserting it into the end of the track opposite the pivot brackets. Release the snugger.

7. Adjust the height of the bifold door. Slightly lift the door assembly so the bottom pivot is raised from the L-shaped pivot bracket. Turn the pivot clockwise to raise the door, and counterclockwise to lower it. Lower the door assembly so the bottom pivot is reinserted into the bottom pivot bracket slot.

8. Plumb the door -- make sure it is straight -- by lifting the assembly and sliding the bottom pivot into your desired position in the slotted hole in the bottom bracket. Loosen the set screw in the pivot bracket in the upper track. Slide the bracket until the door is plumb. Check it with a level. Tighten the set screw.
