Build A Storage Unit For An Entrance

Creating a storage unit for an entrance means balancing function and style. While it's important to have a place for daily clutter, it's also vital to have an entryway that is a welcoming space for everyone. The good news is that an entryway storage unit can be built to serve both purposes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Purchase two white laminated closet organizers from a hardware store, preferably 24 inches wide by 7 feet high. Assemble per manufacturer's instructions. The two organizers placed side by side will create the storage unit.

2. Determine where on the entrance wall to position the storage unit, allowing space to open doors into the room freely, and use a pry bar to remove the baseboard from the wall.

3. Use an electric saw to cut a piece of white bead board that measures 48 inches by 7 feet and attach it flat against the wall where the storage unit will be positioned, with wood glue. Many hardware stores will cut the bead board for a small fee.

4. The bead board makes a backdrop for the open styled closet organizers. Another option is to paint the wall behind the organizers a bold color to add decorative interest.

5. Place the organizers up against the wall, side by side, lined up against the bead board. Use the included L-brackets to attach the units to the wall. Use screws to attach the units to each other from the inside.

6. For a custom finish, attach crown molding to the top of the storage unit.

7. Position the adjustable shelves in one of the units so that there are shelves from floor to top of the unit. Use the shelves for shoes and baskets that can hold daily entrance clutter, for example sunglasses, keys and cell phones.

8. Attach coat hooks to the top and bottom halves of the second unit to hang backpacks and coats. Use the upper, higher-reaching hooks for adults and the lower hooks for kids.
