Instructions
Creating a Modern Minimal Bedroom
1. Choose a color palette. In modern design, not only are the furnishings minimal but so is the color palette. Blacks and dark browns paired with white, cream, beige and gray create interest with high contrast and are a main part of modern design. Often, walls are painted a shade of white, anchored by a dark floor, usually wood, with furnishings in a mix of those colors.
2. Choose a bed. In modern bedroom design, the bed is the focal point. To stay true to the design, select a platform bed that is low to the floor and only requires a mattress. The wood should be a dark brown, black or white, and the covering should tuck under the mattress. Get a matching bedside table if there is room, or mount a "floating" bedside table to a wall to clear up floor space.
3. Select a minimal amount of accessories. While having a few vases can add decorative detail, choose them sparingly. Add hanging light fixtures over your bedside tables or over the center of the bed. Soften straight furniture lines with round hanging pendants.
4. Clear out the room. A blank canvas will help when you decorate your modern bedroom. Repair any walls before painting. Walls should be painted a light color, but you can add a contrast wall to add a punch of color that should be repeated in two other ways in the room.
5. Hang light fixtures once the paint has dried. If new wiring will be needed, have an electrician do this before painting. Choose fixtures with round bodies or straight shades if using lamps.
6. Bring in the largest piece of furniture first. Position the bed, and place other furniture items around it. Remember, simplicity is the key to modern design, so limit furniture and accessories.
7. Hang artwork. Choose pieces that will bring a little color and visual interest, but still have a modern feel. A watercolor painting of a vase of flowers may not be the best choice, but a black-and-white rendering would be a great touch.
