Closet Organizer Instructions

Organize your closet by category to make items easy to find.

We've all been there -- you wake up in the morning and just can't find anything to wear. You rifle through your closet, but it's a mess. You know you bought some new shirts a few weeks ago but just can't find them. It's easy to let your closet get like this, but imagine if everything was organized. The time for your morning routine would be halved, and you'd actually be able to find what you're looking for. Follow these steps to get your closet in order. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Take everything out of your closet. Leave clothes on hangers but remove them from the closet and lay them on the bed. Remove any items from the floor of the closet, including loose clothes and items that don't belong there. Hang the loose clothes on hangers and add them to the pile of clothes on your bed. Take shoes out of the closet and set them to the side in pairs.

2. Go through every item of clothing and see if anything should be given to charity. As a general rule, if you haven't worn an item in the last year, chances are you won't. Put these items in boxes or bags and drop them off at your local Goodwill or Salvation Army.

3. Divide clothes into piles based on categories such as short-sleeve shirts, long-sleeve shirts, skirts, dresses and pants. Choose categories that will help you when searching. If you can never seem to find dressy pants or slacks, make a category for dress pants and non-dressy pants. Stack each item in a pile based on the categories you choose. Make sure clothes don't fall off hangers in the process.

4. Hang clothes back in the closet by category. Once clothes are hanging, further organize them by color. Group all items in similar colors per category, such as black shirts together, then white shirts, then other colors.

5. Buy a shoe rack to hang on your closet door or one for the closet floor. This will help maximize space and keep your pairs of shoes together.

6. Buy stick-on utility hooks to place on wall space inside your closet. Hang hats, scarves, belts or jackets on these hooks.

7. If you have too many clothes on hangers, add shelving or cubbyholes if closet space allows. Fold clothes that don't need to be hung up and place them on shelves or in cubbyholes.
