Remove everything from the closet before you start painting.
If you find yourself yawning every time you go to pick out an outfit, the problem may not be your wardrobe. It could be the closet itself. A bland, boring closet matches virtually any room with its neutrality, but neutral might not be your style. When you feel like being bold, it's time to empty the closet and repaint it yourself. Giving the master closet a new splash of color may be what you need to feel your room and your style are fresh, vibrant and full of personality. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Choose a paint color. Unless you want to go with a neutral color such as cream or beige, there are two schools of thought regarding paint a closet: Paint it the same color as the master bedroom to which it is attached or go in a distinctively different direction. For example, if your bedroom is painted baby blue, a hot pink closet stands out as having a life of its own. A matching blue closet, on the other hand, blends in and acts as an extension of the rest of the room.
2. Remove your clothing, as well as any boxes, hangers, totes and shoe caddies that you may use for storage.
3. Unscrew and remove any hardware in the closet, such as the rod.
4. Line the edges of the closet with blue painter's tape. For example, if you have molding or a baseboard that you do not want to paint, line the top edge with tape. Similarly, if you do not want to paint the ceiling, line the edge of the ceiling where it meets the top of the wall with tape.
5. Blanket the floor of your closet with two layers of old newspaper to catch drips and protect your floor.
6. Pour paint into a paint tray. Roll a paint roller in the paint. Roll it along the wall to paint it.
7. Use a smaller roller or a foam brush to paint areas such as corners and edges with precision.
8. Wait for the paint to dry and paint the closet again with a second coat.
9. Remove the painter's tape and newspaper. Reinstall hardware and put back your clothes and other items.
