Donate Moving Boxes

Donate your used moving boxes

If you recently moved and unpacked, chances are you have a large pile of moving boxes cluttering your new living space. While many people simply break down and discard moving boxes, you may want to consider donating them to someone else who needs them. Think about all the money you spent on the boxes if you purchased them, or the time and energy you spent going to stores to collect their unwanted boxes if you got them for free. Throwing those boxes out when someone else may need them is like throwing away the money, time and effort it took you to acquire them. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Disassemble your boxes, being careful not to tear them in the process so that someone else can easily put them back together. Breaking them down will mean that they take up less while you find someone to take them. Plus, broken-down boxes are much easier to fit in a car for transporting.

2. Ask friends and family members if any of them need boxes. Someone you know may take a few boxes off your hands if she is planning a move or if she has been thinking about reorganizing her closets or garage and donating unwanted items.

3. Post an ad on Craigslist and other free sites. If posting to Craigslist, make sure to post the ad in the website's free section. State how many boxes you have, what size they are and how they can be picked up. For instance, you may ask that people interested in the boxes call you to arrange a pickup day and time, or you may say that you will put them by your front door and people can come by and take them on a first-come-first-serve basis.

4. Call local moving and moving truck companies to ask if they want any remaining boxes. Some of these companies accept used boxes and resell them or make them available for free to their customers. Some companies may be willing to pick up your donated boxes, but chances are you will have to drop them off at the company's location.
