Dress Up A Sliding Closet Mirrored Door

Change the look of mirrored closet doors.

Mirrored sliding closet doors are an alternative to wooden doors and add reflected light to a room as well as providing a large mirrored area. However, the mirror coating on the backs of mirrors can be scratched or worn and the front of the glass can receive scratches or look faded with time. You can refurbish mirrored closet doors or update them with a total makeover or a few added decorations. Achieve an elegant flair or simple makeover with purchased window film, or use acrylic or glass paints to decorate part or all of the mirrored surface. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Window Film

1. Decide whether to cover all of a mirrored door or just portions of the surface with window film. Choose the type of look you desire, such as an etched glass, stained glass or plain frosted glass look.

2. Clean the mirrored door with window cleaner or mild soap and water. Dry the surface thoroughly with a lint-free cloth or paper towels.

3. Measure the mirrored door and trim the film to fit the area you plan to apply it to. Cut to fit the entire surface or trim down to fit a corner or other smaller portion of the mirrored door.

4. Follow manufacturer instructions to apply the film to your mirror. Choose starting points and work downward from the top or upward from the bottom to apply pieces of window film to the mirror. Pull off part of the backing and roll it away from the film as you work. Smooth the film onto the mirror to avoid wrinkles.

Paint

5. Decide whether to use acrylic paints or more transparent glass paints. Obtain a picture or simple shapes to trace to create a pattern guide on the mirror.

6. Use masking tape to secure pattern transfer paper on the desired place on the mirrored door. Work with one area at a time if you choose to paint in multiple places on the mirror surface. Tape the painting pattern, such as an outdoor scene, child's toys or a stained glass Tiffany or flower pattern, over the transfer paper. Trace the outline and details of the pattern with a stylus to transfer the pattern to the mirror.

7. Remove the transfer paper and pattern from the mirror. Use a small amount of window cleaner on a paper towel to remove any tape residue from the mirror. Work from the top of the design area downward to paint the design with glass paints or acrylic paints.

8. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 if you wish to paint other areas of the mirror. Let all painted areas dry thoroughly.

9. Use a black paint pen to outline details in acrylic painted areas if you want.

10. Squeeze liquid stained glass beading to outline and highlight details in areas that you painted with glass paints to look like stained glass, for a little extra dress up to the sliding closet mirrored door.
