Care For An Oak Cupboard Door

Lacquers or stains can bring out the rich natural tones of oak.

Cupboard doors present a clean, organized look to your kitchen and home. Oak cabinets come in two varieties: red and white. These types provide color options for the homeowner. Oak in general is a hardwood that is naturally dent-resistant and pest-resistant. With proper care, an oak cabinet door can last for decades. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Install window treatments that block the sun from directly shining on your oak cupboard doors. Also make sure the oak isn't subject to extreme temperature changes. The light will change the color of your finish and the temperature changes will have adverse effects on the wood such as warping, swelling and shrinkage that may distort the door.

2. Wipe up spills on your oak cabinet doors immediately with a soft rag. Water and food can cause damage to the finish and the wood.

3. Clean your oak cupboard doors once a week with a soft, clean rag and warm, soapy water. Use a non-abrasive dishwashing detergent and squirt just enough into the water to make it sudsy. Dip the rag in the water and wring out completely before wiping down. This will remove dirt that would gradually diminish the look of the oak.

4. Check the hardware of the cupboard door once a month or so. Make sure all the screws are properly set in place. Over time they could work themselves out of their holes.

5. Fix minor scratches and dents with a touch-up kit, which you can buy from the company that sold you the cabinet. Alternatively, for dents, drop a bit of water on the affected area and let it sink in for one minute. Place a cotton cloth over the dent and gently iron over the dent with the iron on a medium setting. The steam from the penetrated water will pull the dent out.
