Diy Hinged Closet Doors

A new closet door can make all the difference.

Building your own closet doors is a great way to make a change from a run-down old door to a new, attractive door. You can build this door to fit any size of closet, using plywood as the material. You'll attach two layers of 3/4-inch plywood together to make the proper thickness for a door. The tools you need for the project are basic, and while experience is helpful for a smooth installation, it is not necessary to complete the project. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Set two 3/4-by-30-by-80-inch plywood sheets on top of each other. Measure the door frame of the closet. Mark the door frame measurements on the two plywood sheets. Adjust the size of the plywood boards based on the size of the door frame, resizing them by cutting along the marks with a saw.

2. Drill 1 1/4-inch wood screws into the plywood sheets, spacing the wood screws every 12 inches in a grid across the plywood sheets. This is what will keep the two sheets of plywood attached to each other.

3. Hold the plywood up to the door frame. Position two hinges between the door and and the frame, so that the hinges are one foot away from the top and bottom of the door. Mark the holes in the hinges against the door and the frame. Drill out each hole and attach the hinges to the door and the frame with 1 1/4-inch wood screws.

4. Drill a 7/8-inch hole, or larger if necessary, for the doorknob on the opposite edge of the door from the hinges, about halfway up the door. Drill out another hole through the edge of the door with the 7/8-inch drill bit and into the previous hole. Use larger drill bits if necessary, depending on the doorknob size, for these two doorknob holes. Insert the first part of a doorknob into the door hole, and attach the second part of the doorknob into the first part.

5. Position the faceplate of the latch at the space on the door frame where the latch strikes the frame. Mark the holes in the faceplate, including the main hole. Remove the faceplate and drill out each hole marked earlier. Attach the faceplate to the frame with 1 1/4-inch wood screws.
