Organize Closets & Drawers

Uncluttered closets can make finding your outfit each day simple.

Closets and dressers can quickly become cluttered and disorganized through day-to-day use. Whether there is an overabundance of clothes, a large collection of shoes or unplanned storage of linens and luggage, the sooner you organize the better. While it may take a solid day to organize closets and drawers that are severely out of order, once they are organized you'll only need to maintain it. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Sorting Your Items

1. Remove everything from your closet or drawers and set clothing on the bed and shoes on the floor, other items, such as linens, can be put aside for now.

2. Sort the clothes into four piles. One pile for damaged or heavily stained clothes to be thrown away and another for clothes you don't want anymore that can be donated. Create the last two piles of clothes you are certain to keep and clothes you aren't sure whether to keep.

3. Repeat Step 2 for the shoes and any other items that have been stored in your closet or drawers such as luggage, sheets, towels and other items to sort them into four piles.

4. Try on any items from your unsure pile to see what fits or isn't as appealing as you remembered it being. Put items into the discard, donate or keep pile as you go through them. Sort through all items in the unsure pile.

5. Discard the items to be thrown out. Collect the donation items and set by your front door or into the trunk of your car so it can be dropped off the next time you go out. Make sure the only things left in your bedroom are the items you intend to keep.

6. Sort all of the kept items by type, such as shirts, pants, shoes, linens and so on until every item has been grouped with other items of its kind.

Organizing Your Items

7. Set shoes into the bottom of the closet either in their boxes or into a cubby or shoe shelves, if available, that will keep each pair separated. Use an over-the-door shoe hanging if you have one.

8. Group all of your shirts together and organize them by color before hanging them back in the closet or folding and placing in drawers. Keep your shirts separated in your closet and drawers by thickness so all of your T-shirts are together and sweaters are together.

9. Repeat grouping items by type and then color with pants and skirts grouped together, and then with dresses and long overcoats. Place into your closet or into your dresser with pants and skirts in one drawer and dresses or overcoats in another.

10. Sort accessories such as ties and belts by color as well and hang or roll up and place on a hook, coat hanger, into a drawer or into a container to be stored on your closet shelf.

11. Set any remaining items such as luggage or spare linens on shelves in the closet, in unused dresser drawers, or store in containers under your bed if possible to leave the closet and dresser clear of non-clothes related items.
