Start Organizing Closets

Use baskets to organize your clothing.

Closets are common storage unit in all living spaces. While some smaller units only have one or two closets for storing, larger units such as houses will have closets in every room, including the hallways. There are several ways you can organize your closets so that the items you need are readily available. When you are readily to organize your closet, empty out the closets, so you are starting with piles of clothes and items and empty closets. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Divide the items for the closet into categories, if you have more than one closet to organize. For example, put all of your clothing into one pile, as this will go into your bedroom closet. Put seasonal clothing, such as winter coats, bathing suits and winter boots into another pile, as this will be stored in other closets you do not use every day.

2. Put shoes in a separate pile, as shoes will go in the closet near the front door. You are more likely to wear shoes that are near the front door compared to shoes that are stored away in a closet upstairs, for example.

3. Put fine shirts, jackets and pants on hangers. If you do not have a rod for hangers, consider installing one as it will help keep your closet organized. You can either hang the clothing in color-coordinated sequence or in categories, such as all pants together and all short-sleeved shirts together. For all casual clothing, fold the items nicely in piles by types of clothing and put the piles on the shelves in the closet. If you do not have shelves, consider purchasing a shelving unit that either hangs from the rod or stands on the floor.

4. Place all socks in one box and all underwear in another box, if you do not have a dresser. This will keep smaller items organized in the closet. Put these boxes on shelves in the closet.

5. Use the same system in all closets in the home. For example, if you are hanging items in order of their color, use the color approach in all closets. This creates consistency and simplicity throughout the home.

6. Give away clothing or items that you do not use anymore. Although you keep telling yourself that you will use it, chances are that you will not if you are not going to wear it next week. Clothing and accessory items that you are no longer using just take up space.
